Pete McCloskey fundraiser in Portola Valley March 19
Former congressman Pete McCloskey is returning to his Peninsula roots to preach his message and to raise money in his latest crusade, to unseat Rep. Richard Pombo, R-Tracy, in California's 11th congressional district.
Mr. McCloskey will talk issues at a fundraiser in Portola Valley Sunday, March 19, from 5 to 7 p.m., at the home of Ruth Anne and Walter Bortz at 167 Bolivar Lane. Former Portola Valley Mayor Jon Silver and Danna Breen will chair the event.
While Mr. McCloskey's environmental message may resonate nationally, he faces an uphill battle to defeat a seven-term incumbent in a Central Valley district that extends from U.S. 101 south of San Jose to the Sierra foothills.
With the slogan, "Return integrity to Congress," Mr. McCloskey is attacking Mr. Pombo for his ties to lobbyist Jack Abramoff, and for his environmental record. For example, Mr. Pombo is carrying the bill to weaken the Endangered Species Act, which Mr. McCloskey helped write when he was in Congress between 1967 and 1983.
As of last week, the McCloskey fundraiser had 42 co-sponsors, ranging from former Belmont mayor David Bomberger to Alex and Leah Zaffaroni of Portola Valley..
Mr. Silver suggests donations of $125, with a minimum of $60, and a maximum of $2,100.
