'Symphony in Flowers' fundraiser

Bookmark and Share
The Mid-Peninsula League of the San Francisco Symphony celebrates the San Francisco Symphony's 100th birthday in grand style with an evening of cocktails, floral displays, fine dining and musical entertainment Sunday, May 6, at the Menlo Circus Club, 190 Park Lane in Atherton.

The benefit will feature musicians from the San Francisco Symphony.

This is the second year the gala will be held at the Circus Club. For years, the league's major fundraiser was a garden tour. The difficulties of staffing and finding homeowners willing to open their gardens to the public led members to look for a new format, which has proved to be a winner.

"We are a small league and it was just too difficult for our members to staff four different gardens for two days," says league spokesman Mimi Kugushev, who served as co-chair of last year's event.

Betty Jean Ogawa, league president, and Nancy Greenbach , former president, are co-chairs of this year's gala, which begins at 5 p.m. During the cocktail hour, guests will visit tables with floral displays for sale, as well as auction items, ranging from $100 gift certificates to $5,000 African safaris.

One of the auction highlights is an evening of music and fine wine for 26 guests to be held at the home of a league member.

Proceeds from the event benefit the San Francisco Symphony and its education and community outreach programs, including "Concerts for Kids."

Six weeks of music listening and training by Mid-Peninsula League docents culminated Jan. 18 and 20 when 350 second- and third-grade students from the Ravenswood Elementary School District were transported to San Francisco for a special performance by the San Francisco Symphony. Children from Costano, Brentwood and Willow Oaks Schools attended the concert, accompanied by nine league members and 16 teachers.

Tickets to the benefit are $190 per person. For more information, call 321-3718.
