Around Town: A day for horses in Woodside
Woodside's annual celebration of the town's love affair with all things equine is set for Saturday, Oct. 14, from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at and around Woodside Town Hall.
The Day of the Horse event is free and open to all ages. Those with horses can participate in a progressive trail ride with goodies and prizes. For the horseless, there are plenty of activities, demonstrations and exhibits to get them in touch with their inner equestrian.
The Wells Fargo stagecoach again will be giving rides, there will be a petting zoo, children's games and representatives of horse clubs and riding programs will be on hand.
The Woodside Community Museum will be holding a special exhibit on the town's 50th anniversary of incorporation featuring artifacts from 1956 and the community's historic incorporation vote. Day of the Horse also kicks off the museum's first foray into holding regular hours — it will be open Saturdays from 1-4 p.m., says Thalia Lubin.
Day of the Horse is organized by the aptly named WHOA, the Woodside-area Horse Owners Association, and information about the event is online at whoa94062.org.
WHOA is a local group dedicated to preserving Woodside's rural, horsey ambience and promoting equestrian activities.

Music, kids' games at Atherton barbecue
The annual Atherton town barbecue is set for Sunday, Oct. 15, from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Holbrook-Palmer Park, 150 Watkins Ave.
Live music and children's activities set the scene for a family event, although there will be beer and wine for the grown-ups. The event is hosted by the Holbrook-Palmer Recreation Park Foundation and the Atherton Dames. Proceeds will help fund the construction of a new footbridge into the park.
Tickets cost $25 for the dinner-time picnic on the green, $50 a seat for tables or $450 for a table of 10 and should be bought in advance. Call Pattie at 752-0536 for tickets and information.
'Holidays on a High Note' set for Oct. 16
Twenty-three tables showcasing holiday entertaining ideas will be featured at "Holidays on a High Note" from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 16, at the Menlo Circus Club in Atherton. The annual event is sponsored by the Foothill Auxiliary to Family Service Agency of San Mateo County.
The day will also include demonstrations by floral designers Connie Oakson and Kren Ramussen, a luncheon, a home boutique store, and a silent auction. Co-chairs Kris Forbes and Andi Mallinckrodt hope to exceed last year's benefit, which raised $20,000 for Family Service Agency.
Among the local designers and businesses creating holiday tables are: A Bed of Flowers, Cheeky Monkey, Kelley Interiors, Leslie Rehlaender Design, Quintessence, and the Dressed Room, Menlo Park; Andi Maillinckrodt Events & Floral Design, Woodside; Carol Whitfield, Atherton; Neiman Marcus and Williams Sonoma Home, Stanford Shopping Center.

Menlo College celebrates homecoming
Menlo College will celebrate its 77th homecoming on Friday and Saturday, October 13-14, on the Atherton campus.
At 5 p.m. Friday, inductions into the Athletic Hall of Fame will take place in Russell Center. Homecoming dinner is set for 6 p.m. in the Dining Commons. Cost is $35.
At noon on Saturday the Menlo College Oaks football team will play the Pacific Lutheran University Lutes on Cartan Field. Cost is $5 (free for Menlo alumnus). For more information, call Elena Arney 415-462-1883.
Guys, Dolls, Divas in Menlo Park
Broadway tunes, as well as arias and ensemble pieces from the operatic stage, will be presented at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 7, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints annex at 1105 Valparaiso Ave. in Menlo Park.
Six artists from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, the San Francisco Opera Center, and elsewhere will be singing favorites from "Guys and Dolls," "Carmen," "South Pacific," "Rigoletto," "My Fair Lady," "Cosi fan tutte," and "Porgy and Bess."
The concert is free and open to the public.
