Share
"Getting to Know You," a free seminar, will be held at the Menlo Park Family History Center of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 18, at 1105 Valparaiso Ave. in Menlo Park. Registration is at 8 a.m.

The seminar will highlight new genealogy products and developments. The keynote speaker will be Jay L. Verkler, an executive with management experience at Oracle, who now heads the LDS Church development effort. He will speak at 8:30 a.m., describing new Internet products about to be released to the public.

Thirty-two classes will be taught by genealogists. Attendees may work all day with free mentors to aid them in their research.

The Menlo Park Family History Center is open each Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday to the public. It has a bank of online computers with full Internet resources. To pre-register for the seminar, go to www.Jissite.net.

Entrepreneurs dedicate history exhibition

Three notable entrepreneurs from San Mateo County will help dedicate the new exhibit on "History Makers: Entrepreneurs who Changed the World" at an old-fashioned Chautauqua on Saturday, Nov. 18, at 2 p.m. at the History Museum, 2200 Broadway in Redwood City.

The three panelists are all current entrepreneurs. This information was provided by the San Mateo County History Museum:

• Umang Gupta, the 17th employee at Oracle, built the world's first "client-server system," and has been head of Keynote Systems in San Mateo since 1997. He is currently chairman of the San Mateo County Historical Association.

• Trip Hawkins, a pioneer in video games and new media industries, left Apple in 1982 to found Electronic Arts, and later 3DO and Digital Chocolate. His mission is to improve social lives by using computers to play and "learn by doing."

• Miller Ream developed the rural Borel estate in San Mateo into commercial properties and built the first office building in the area. He was a pioneer in luring large commercial clients from San Francisco, and leading the county's shift to corporate occupancy.

Admission to museum activities is $4 for adults, $2 for children and seniors, and free for members.

Mitch Postel to talk on Menlo Park history

Metch Postel, president of the San Mateo County Historical Association, will speak about Menlo Park history at the annual meeting of the Menlo Park Historical Association on Sunday, Nov. 19, from 2 to 4 p.m. in the basement of the Menlo Park Library, 800 Alma St.

Mr. Postel, who has led the year-long celebration of San Mateo County's Sesquicentennial (150 years) and restoration of the historic courthouse, will focus on the Kavanaugh family, who still serve the goodies at the association's parties.

The talk will be preceded by a business meeting and followed by refreshments.

'Womenade' supports local health clinic

The Ravenswood Family Health Center, which serves low-income people east of Bayshore, hopes to benefit by a "Womenade" drop-in tea on Saturday, Nov. 18, from 3:30 to 5 p.m., at the Menlo College Cafeteria at 1000 El Camino Real in Atherton.

Julie Brody and Julie Merk, advocates for increasing access to health care for those who can't afford it, will tell about the work done by the health center in East Palo Alto that provides primary health care to the uninsured and underserved in South San Mateo County.

For information, go to ravenswoodfhc.org.

Womenade was started by a small group of women in the area of Washington, D.C., who wanted to get together informally to raise money for good causes — lemons make lemonade; women make womenade — get it? See washingtonwomenade.org.
