Around Town: Beatles tribute band opens summer concerts

The Sun Kings, a Beatles tribute band, will launch Menlo Park's summer concert series at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 27, in Fremont Park, at the corner of Santa Cruz Avenue and University Drive in downtown Menlo Park.

The hour-long free concerts will run at the same time and location each Wednesday through Aug. 15, with the exception of the July Fourth concert, when The Cheeseballs, a 1970s-80s cover band, will perform at Burgess Park from noon to 12:30 p.m. as part of Menlo Park's Independence Day celebrations.

Other dates and acts: July 11, Kathleen Clairns & Tattoo Blue, a jazz and blues group; July 18, country musicians the California Cowboys; July 25, Latin rhythm band La Ventana; Aug. 1, modern Big Band and soul fusion group, the Bingtones; Aug. 8, Tony Lindsey, a funk and soul artist; and Aug. 15, jazz vocalist Hale Baskin.

Going green with children

Garth Harwood, director of Hidden Villa Environmental Education Program in Los Altos Hills, and Alice Valentine, from the "No Waste" program of Laurel and Encinal schools, will show and tell how critical environmental issues can be addressed with children at 8 p.m. Wednesday, June 27, at Kepler's bookstore, 1010 El Camino Real in Menlo Park.

The event is part of Kepler's Go-Green summer series of programs aimed at elevating community awareness about global warming and what can be don about it.

Dionne Warwick at Summer Symphony

Singer Dionne Warwick will headline the 48th annual Summer Symphony on July 15 at the Frost Amphitheatre on the Sanford campus.

The event is the annual benefit for the Children's Health Council, whose stated mission is to make "a measurable difference" in the lives of children and their families who face developmental, behavioral, emotional, and learning challenges.

Ms. Warwick will perform with Arnie Roth and the Summer Symphony Orchestra.

Gates will be open at 4:30 p.m. for picnicking and pre-concert entertainment. The concert starts at 6 p.m.

USGS talk on Southwest geology

Geologist Philip Stoffer will give a 3-D tour of the southern Colorado Plateau at the U.S. Geological Survey's free monthly lecture on Thursday, June 28, at 7 p.m. in Building 3 at 345 Middlefield Road in Menlo Park.

"Adventures in Southwest Geology" will cover colorful parks such as the Petrified Forest, Grand Canyon, and Chaco Canyon; climate change in the high desert; history of the Colorado River; desert life, death and dunes; and geologic history, involving volcanoes, mountain building and erosion. Don't miss Hale Baskin. She is a local favorite that has really been an inspiration. I have enjoyed her since she was 11 years old singing jazz at Woodside Elementary School.
