Local AYSO team wins championship
It came down to penalty kicks for the local Sharp Blades soccer team, which won the recent regional AYSO soccer championship in Saratoga.
The Sharp Blades, the Menlo Park-Atherton team for girls under age 16 in Region 109, beat the previously undefeated West San Jose Cougars, 3-2, on Nov. 15.
Vanessa Balcazar, Murphy Callender and Paola Rosales scored for the Menlo Park-Atherton team.
The Sharp Blades qualified for the finals with a 4-2 comeback victory over Palo Alto in the semi-finals. That game was also decided by penalty kicks, with Balcazar, Callender, Esmeralda Garcia and Hannah Lawry scoring.
"I knew West San Jose was going to be a very difficult team to beat, but I also knew my girls could do it," said Pastor Guzman, the team's parent-volunteer coach.
Team members attend Hillview and La Entrada middle schools, Summit Preparatory, Castilleja and Pinewood schools, Menlo-Atherton High School and the King's Academy.
Report by John Takayama, spokesman for AYSO Region 109.
