Portola Valley solicitation ordinance up for revision

Bookmark and Share
A discussion and possible revision of Portola Valley's solicitation ordinance is set for Town Council consideration at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 24, at the Historic Schoolhouse at 765 Portola Road.

The phrase "do-not-contact list" appeals to residents who prefer to be free from door-to-door peddlers, but such lists are no barrier to visitors with religious or political agendas since these are matters protected by the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.

Because residents tend to lump the two types of solicitation together, town staff is recommending that the council eliminate the town's "do not contact" list, educate residents on their options, and toughen the process of acquiring a solicitation permit, including a face-to-face meeting with a uniformed law enforcement officer and more vigorous enforcement.

The meeting starts with a review of emergency preparedness by Armando Muela, fire chief of the Woodside Fire Protection District. The review precedes a fire-safety discussion to be held with the Woodside Town Council on Wednesday, March 31, at the Portola Valley Community Hall.
