Homeless man knocked out, robbed
Mountain View police say they have in custody Menlo Park transient David Harris, 32, who allegedly punched out an elderly homeless man before taking his wallet on Wednesday night, March 31.
Police allege that Mr. Harris punched a 74-year-old Mountain View transient in the back of the head before taking his wallet at around 10:30 p.m. near the CVS store at San Antonio shopping center. Witnesses reported that the suspect continued to punch the victim as he lay on the ground.
"They don't know each other at all," said police spokesperson Liz Wylie. "This was a random act."
Based on witness descriptions of the suspect, police found Mr. Harris walking in San Antonio Shopping Center with blood on him and carrying bloody money.
Mr. Harris is a transient from the Menlo Park area, Ms. Wylie said, and the victim had been staying in the nearby San Antonio Inn.
Paramedics found the victim conscious at the CVS store after 911 calls about an elderly man who possibly fell. The victim was transported to the local hospital and is expected to recover from his injuries. He could not recall the incident, police said.
Mr. Harris was booked into the Santa Clara County main jail on robbery charges. Ms. Wylie said police were still talking to the Santa Clara County district attorney's office about additional charges.
