Menlo School hosts Special Olympics

Bookmark and Share
This story was submitted by Elisabeth Waymire, parent co-chair of the Menlo Games 2010.

Menlo School hosted the 19th annual Special Olympics Northern California Track & Field Meet on Sunday, April 18. More than 100 athletes participated in 15 track and field events, including the 50M run/walk, 4x100 relay, and long jump, plus adaptive sports activities such as the softball throw.

Some 250 Menlo Upper School students teamed up with the athletes as buddies, to cheer them on and assist them with their activities. Menlo Upper School parents served a barbecue lunch and helped with the timing of track events.

Menlo Middle School students and parents ran an Olympic Village, which included games and crafts for athletes and their families to enjoy between events. All athletes received water bottles and T-shirts designed by Menlo students.

Volunteers included the staff with the Atherton and South San Francisco police departments. The event was supported by donations from Bianchini's Market, Gray's Paint Menlo Park, Hobee's California Restaurants, Noah's, Party Fiesta Balloon Decor, Peter Draeger, Posh Bagel, Roberts Market, Sigona's Farmers Market, and Whole Foods Market.

It was a memorable day for the whole community.
