In November, there will be local elections for the city councils of Atherton and Menlo Park, and the boards of directors for the Las Lomitas and Menlo Park elementary school districts, the Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District, and the Sequoia Healthcare District.

The four-week candidate filing period began July 12.

For potential candidates and their staff, a free 90-minute seminar will be held from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 20, at the San Mateo County Elections Office at 40 Tower Road in San Mateo.

To reserve a seat, contact Filing Officer Megan Asmus at 312-5293 or at masmus@smcare.org with your name, the office you're seeking, and the number of people who will accompany you.

Everyone who attends receives a 75-page candidate's guide, a useful document since laws, forms and reporting requirements may differ from election to election, said Chief Elections Officer Warren Slocum.

Go to is.gd/dhW9p (case sensitive) for an online copy of the guide.
