Around Town: 'Farmer Jane' at Flea Street

Jesse Cool and Flea Street Cafe will present Temra Costa, author of "Farmer Jane: Women Changing the Way We Eat," and Dru Rivers of Full Belly Farm in a conversation about women and food at 5:30 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 8, at the cafe.

The five-course meal will include heirloom tomato and peach strata, braised lamb, melon sorbet, suckling pig, and plum crostata. Ingredients used in preparing the dinner will be from Full Belly Farm.

Dinner is $85 per person, with optional wine pairing at $30 per person. Signed copies of "Farmer Jane" will be available for purchase. For reservations, call 854-1226. Flea Street Cafe is located at 3607 Alameda de las Pulgas in Menlo Park.

Great songs from shows that failed

The Menlo Park Library will present "Great Songs from Shows that Failed" with American musical theater expert Joe Marchi at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 7, in the library's downstairs meeting room.

The program will feature recorded songs that became famous, despite the fact that the shows failed.

Mr. Marchi established in 1984 the Center for the American Musical at Canada College, where he was a professor and assistant dean of students. He is a member of the San Francisco Theater Bay Area Critics Circle.

The program is supported by the Friends of the Menlo Park Library. Free van service is available for Menlo Park seniors and those with disabilities. For more information, or to schedule transportation, call 330-2512.

Police-community partnerships

To help create police-community partnerships, the Menlo Park community services and police departments are co-sponsoring a free "National Night Out" event at the Onetta Harris Community Center, 100 Terminal Ave. in Menlo Park, from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 3.

There will be carnival games, food, music and an open swim at Belle Haven Pool. For more information, call 330-2250.

Djerassi artists open house

The Djerassi Resident Artists Program will open its 580-acre ranch in the Santa Cruz Mountains for its annual "Open House, Open Studios" program from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 1. Eight artists are currently in residence at the ranch.

The afternoon will include open artists' studios, dance and music performances, literary readings, and self-guided tours of the ranch's sculpture collection. Small dishes, prepared by the program's chef, will be served throughout the afternoon.

Admission is $30 and reservations are required.
