Briefs: 'Movie under Stars' in Portola Valley

The Portola Valley Cultural Arts Committee is inviting the community to watch a free movie "under the stars" on Friday, Aug. 20, at the courtyard lawn of the Portola Valley Town Center.

"This event will be the first of its kind at the new town center," said Deirdre Clark, co-chair of the committee.

The movie, "Pirates of the Caribbean: the Curse of the Black Pearl," will be shown at 8 p.m.. Popcorn, sandwiches, non-alcoholic drinks and treats will be sold, she said.

"Folks are encouraged to come at 6:30 to picnic, socialize and listen to music featuring CDs from local bands," she said in an announcement. "We welcome your family and friends. Bring blankets and a picnic. All ages are welcome. Unfortunately, please leave your dogs at home."

'Supersize Me'

The Little House Activity Center in Menlo Park will have a free showing of the film, "Supersize Me," at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 3 in the Garden Room, Margaret Petitjean, a spokesperson for Little House, has announced.

The film shows the dire effects of the fast-food diet.

Little House is at 800 Middle Ave. behind Nealon Park. "All our welcome," she said. "It's a must viewing for living healthy longer. Visit and pick up a program of Little House activities."

Teens offer to pick fruits, vegetables

As fall approaches, homegrown fruits and vegetables are sure to be in abundance. The Portola Valley Teen Committee is looking for people with excess fresh fruits and vegetables in their gardens and lots that might otherwise go to waste.

The teens are offering to pick the fruits and vegetables and transport them to organizations that feed the needy, such as Second Harvest Food Bank in San Carlos.

This new effort, called Sharing the Bounty, has the added benefit of keeping gardens and lots clean from fallen, rotting fruits, notes project spokesperson Sharon Driscoll.

• Vendela Vida discusses her new novel, "The Lovers," at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 11.
