Behold: the Monte Cristo burger

Here's a burger for the books.

Now available at Umami Burger in downtown Palo Alto is the "Monte Cristo" burger, made with Umami's standard beef patty, which is covered in gruyere cheese fondue and prosciutto and sandwiched between two custard-soaked and fried Umami burger buns. Don't worry, it doesn't end there: The buns are topped with powdered sugar and the $15 burger served with a side of Umami's own maple syrup.

This limited edition heart-attack-on-a-plate is being offered at all Umami locations and was created in culinary collaboration with Southern California chef Michael Voltaggio, who also recently won Bravo's reality cooking show, Top Chef. Foodies might have been to or heard of Voltaggio's restaurant ink, or sandwich shop, ink.sack.

This burger is not only decadent; it's also doing good. One dollar from every Monte Cristo sold will go to a Los Angeles homeless shelter, Los Angeles Mission.

The burger will be served up at all Umami locations nationwide while supplies last.
The Palo Alto location is at 452 University Ave.

It's a foodie version of what's called a "Donut Burger" in Kentucky (a bacon cheeseburger within a sliced Krispy Creme donut).

Member: Sounds even better with Krispy Kreme. Definitely part of a larger trend of gimmicky hybrid/mashup dishes.
