Palo Alto: Bird Dog adds lunch service

Downtown Palo Alto restaurant Bird Dog has settled into serving weekday lunch after operating as a dinner-only restaurant since its opening in 2015.

The lunch menu, which Bird Dog started offering in May, is distinct from dinner with the exception of the restaurant's signature wood-grilled avocado dish. The menu is available from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Lunch was always "in the pipeline for Bird Dog," said managing partner Emily Perry Wilson (and wife of owner Robbie Wilson), but they wanted to focus on dinner before expanding. They were also encouraged by requests from dinner patrons, she said.

"While there are numerous fast-casual options in downtown Palo Alto, there are few that offer full-service," Perry Wilson added. "We felt there was a niche to be filled."

Some current lunch-only dishes include kanpachi with grapes, yuzu kosho, finger lime and shisho ($18); a sandwich of pine-smoked unagi and mustard leaf kimchi served on a dutch crunch roll ($19); and pork katsu with smoked banana, miso butterscotch, aji amarillo and kohlrabi ($24). Prices range from $10 to $28.

The menu has been changing on average every other week "based on seasonality of product," Perry Wilson said.

Pretentious menu and already tired place

I wish they would add different items the menu

Why has dining in PA become such a pretentious experience? Is elitism a natural by-product of being upwardly mobile?

Diversity in restaurant offerings is welcome here!

I'm glad it is not just mediocre Chinese, greasy spoons, $2 taquerias, and pancake shops. I think it's great that some restaurant operators set the bar a little higher, have higher expectations of what they are trying to accomplish.

Cheap eats are great, everyone has them, even in Tokyo, Paris, London, as well as Palo Alto.

Remember no one can please everyone all the time. If this restaurant is not for you, then don't go. That's fine. That's really life in a nutshell, you can't do and like everything.

Maybe you'd prefer to eat fried chicken out of a bucket, go watch Kenny Chesney at Shoreline Amphitheater and drink Pabst Blue Ribbon. Then do it! It's still a free country!

Enjoy life a little!

For lunch I'm happy with a big $7.50 turkey sandwich from Subway. Sit at a nice table across the street in Lytton Plaza and people watch.

Look, they've started in already, just like with Nobu Web Link . Again the apparent compulsion to not just disdain a new offering, but rationalize that behavior with supercilious stereotype projections ("elitism" etc.).

That those are niche minority opinions (even if the same few people express them, over and over, in this blog) is clear from the rest of Palo Alto voting this place "Best New Restaurant" last year.
