Mademoiselle Colette opens second location in Palo Alto

The owner of Menlo Park patisserie Mademoiselle Colette soft opened her second location on Friday, Oct. 6, on Lytton Avenue in Palo Alto.

The 499 Lytton Ave. space has no kitchen, so this outpost will serve only pastries and to-go items, rather than the full menu of French salads, sandwiches, brunch dishes and other items available in Menlo Park, owner Debora Ferrand said. In Palo Alto, cold salads, quiches and sandwiches will soon be available to-go.

There will, however, be a larger selection of coffees and drinks in Palo Alto, Ferrand said.

Ferrand, an Atherton resident who was born in Brazil but raised in France, opened the French bakery in downtown Menlo Park in 2015. She soon brought on a young French pastry chef, Orphée Fouano.

Less than a year later, Ferrand took over the space vacated by Fran's Market in Palo Alto, and also leased a kitchen in Newark to start outsourcing croissants and pastries production. (Ferrand struggled to keep up with demand when she first opened in Menlo Park, selling out every day for about a month.)

"Now we will be having croissants and pastries all day long... no more sold out at 10 a.m. :-) in Palo Alto (or) Menlo Park," she wrote in an email.

People don't realize how hard and long it takes to make a good croissant. I've made them several times and it takes 3 days of prep to make a good buttery flaky croissant. It's nice to have a place near us with good quality pastries. Mayfield and deuce france are fine, but those aren't real croissants. Thank you Mademoiselle Colette for sharing your talent.

Nice to see that Mademoiselle Colette is expanding. It is difficult to describe the wonderful treats from this bakery to my friends. They just had to experience it for themselves. All of them were floored by the quality.

Mademoiselle Colette's pastries are wonderful. I live in Menlo Park and always look forward to meeting my friends at Colette's on Santa Cruz Ave. There salads are also great. Glad they are expanding.

Welcome to Palo Alto! I have been a fan since you opened in Menlo Park. We will be visiting often. I especially love the quiches, which like the croissants, taste like pure France!

Feeling of France in our town.

This store in Menlo Park on Santa Cruz Avenue in downtown is worth the visit.
