Opening alert: Icicles in Mountain View

Uploaded: Jan 2, 2018
Bay Area rolled ice cream shop Icicles is now open in downtown Mountain View.

Icicles officially opened in late December at 292 Castro St. The shop serves fresh Thai-style rolled ice cream, which is made by pouring an ice cream base onto a flat, cold surface, mixing in add-ins, scraping and chopping it repeatedly and then rolling it into papyrus scroll-shaped servings.

Icicles' ice cream is made in-house. Customers can choose from flavors like oreo, strawberry, matcha and avocado or customize their own flavors with unlimited toppings. There are also dairy-free sorbet options.

Owner Lit Leong opened the first Icicles in San Jose in 2016, drawing hour-long waits. He has since added six locations throughout the Bay Area and one in Sacramento.

Icicles was first slated to open at 282 Castro St. but later took over the neighboring space, where the owner of Srasa Kitchen had planned to open a rolled ice cream shop. Leong said in November that 282 Castro would have taken a year or more to build out, while 292 Castro didn't require any major construction.

Icicles Mountain View is open from noon to 10 p.m. daily.
