Downtown Mountain View gets an acai-bowl shop

The persistent trend of acai bowls is continuing in Mountain View with the addition of Mahalo Bowl, a food truck’s first brick-and-mortar location on Castro Street.

Mahalo Bowl has been serving up Hawaiian-style acai bowls at 650 Castro St., Suite 140, since early November. It’s the "flagship" location for a food truck that founder David Holyoak started in 2014 "to bring delicious acai bowls to the Bay Area," the shop’s website reads. Holyoak did not respond to interview requests.


Mahalo Bowl has brought the uber trendy and healthy acai bowl to downtown Mountain View.

For those who don’t know, acai bowls are made with smoothie-like bases of the frozen Brazilian berry, mixed with other fruits or add-ins (from kale and spinach to nut milks and peanut butter), then topped with similar ingredients (granola, nuts, fruit, honey, coconut shavings -- the list goes on). For example, Mahalo Bowl’s "original" bowl is a blend of acai, apple juice, bananas, blueberries and strawberries topped with granola, banana, strawberries and honey. Get a visual here.

Mahalo Bowl's bowls are made with all-natural ingredients, with no added sugar, high-fructose corn syrup or dairy, according to the website.

The shop also serves smoothies and pitaya bowls (similar to the acai bowls, but the base acai berries are swapped out pitaya, a bright-pink dragonfruit packed with antioxidants, fiber and vitamins).

Mahalo Bowl is open Monday through Saturday, 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. The truck is also still in operation; follow its movements on social media.

Mahalo Bowl is just the latest acai-bowl shop to open in the area, following Bowl of Heaven and Nekter in Mountain View and Bare Bowls and Vitality Bowls in Palo Alto.
