Pooch Pageant. This is a different kind of dog show, promise members of the Rotary Club of Woodside/Portola Valley, which will hold its first annual Pooch Pageant on September 26 at the Woodside Elementary School grounds.

Dogs will be judged in unusual categories, such as Best Tail Wagger, Best Kisser, Muttiest Mutt, Best Fed, and Best Dog-Owner Look-alike.

There will be prizes, a silent auction, and refreshments, including hotdogs, hamburgers and soft drinks.

Dogs must be registered by September 18. Entry forms are at local businesses, including Roberts market in Woodside and John's Valley Foods in Portola Valley.

The entry fee is $20 per dog for two categories; additional categories are $5 each per dog.

Proceeds will be used to benefit service programs of the Rotary Club and the Palo Alto Humane Society.

Computer chaos. They've been scrambling in Woodside Town Hall ever since a computer malfunction recently took out the town's computer network and the back-up system at the same time.

The problem, said Town Manager Susan George, "won't be fatal, just productivity sapping for a while."

Ms. George said the town lost several months of data and reports. "We are having to re-enter some data and to scan hard copies of reports back into the system," she said.

The cause of the problem has yet to be determined.

It almost makes one long for the good old days of pen and paper.

Weather permitting, the Peninsula Astronomical Society will once again set up their massive telescopes for Hidden Villa's annual stargazing party on Saturday, August 29, from 8:30 to 11 p.m.

A number of heavenly bodies should be visible, including star clusters, galaxies, and the star Vega (which attained star-dom in the Jodie Foster film "Contact").

Bring lawn chairs or a blanket to sit upon, a flashlight, and your astronomical questions. Admission is $5 per person; children under 3 years of age are free.

Hidden Villa Farm is at 26870 Moody Road, Los Altos Hills; call 949-8653 for reservations.
