(August 26, 1998)**1958: San Mateo County approves The Sequoias for 300 residents.
**1961: The Sequoias opens.
**1964: Portola Valley incorporates.
**1964: Portola Valley approves addition of a convalescent hospital with 26 permanent residents to the previously approved facility for 300 residents.
**1965: Portola Valley approves its own general plan, with the provision: "Residential type institutional facilities should be limited to a density of population no greater than that proposed for adjoining residential areas in the general plan."
**1975: Portola Valley gives The Sequoias conforming status under the zoning ordinance and allows construction of a personal care facility for approximately 20 people, but retained total occupancy at 326.
**1984: Portola Valley approves construction of a swimming pool.
**1991: Portola Valley gives permission for the hospital to be used for emergency care of town residents, and allows a maximum of six beds to be used for respite care by residents of Portola Valley and its sphere of influence for up to 15 days.
**1994: Portola Valley allows up to eight beds in the hospital to be used for permanent residents from outside The Sequoias, raising the permanent occupancy to 334.
