The Tech

You can't miss the new mango and azure-colored domed building that houses Silicon Valley's new Tech Museum, opening Saturday at 201 S. Market St. in San Jose.

Planners of the museum have tried to harness Silicon Valley creativity in a minds-on museum focused on technology -- how it works and the way it is changing every aspect of the way we work, live, play and learn.

The 132,000-square-foot building houses four theme galleries packed with one-of-a-kind and interactive exhibits showing off the wonders of Silicon Valley. In these galleries visitors can explore: Innovation: Silicon Valley and Beyond; Communications: Global Connections; Life Tech: The Human Machine; and Exploration: New Frontiers.

In addition there is a 295-seat Hackworth IMAX Dome Theater that will be showing the film "Everest," projected onto an 82-foot domed screen.

The Tech also includes the Robert N. Noyce Center for Learning, an upscale cafe, and a retail store.

Twenty years in the planning, the $96 million Tech is a joint project with the San Jose Redevelopment Agency, which put up $41 million. The rest came from a capital campaign and in-kind equipment and services from over 400 companies.

The Tech will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Sundays. Prices are $8 for exhibits or IMAX only, with $6 for children and $7 for seniors. Combination tickets are $13.50 for general admission, $10 for children, and $12.50 for seniors.

The Tech may be reached at (408) 294-TECH, or www.thetech.org.
