Ask the officer Ask the officer (February 24, 1999)

Menlo Park police officer Glenn J. Raggio answers questions about the police. Call 858-3327 or email: asktheofficer@menlopark.org.

I recently broke up with my boyfriend. Since we broke up, my car has been vandalized three times. I think it's him. How can I prove it?

First, did you call the police to report the incidents? If you haven't, do so. The officer will tell you that having a witness to the vandalism is critical. I suggest you tell your neighbors to keep an eye out for your boyfriend and his vehicle. Ask them to tell you if they see him and when; keep a log. Try to contact the people across the street from where you live. They will have a direct view onto your property and will likely see more than the people living in your building. You may ask them to call the police if they see anything unusual. Note the damage to your car on a daily basis. If he's caught in the area of your car and you have "new" damage, it may go a long way to proving your case.

Has the new chief been picked out yet?

Not yet. The process is still in the recruitment stage.

Why do the police respond to medical calls?

For two very important reasons: We are often closer and can respond quicker initially to medical emergencies. While the fire department is usually only moments behind us, there have been times when an officer has saved a life by being there those precious seconds earlier. We all have first-aid training. On medical emergencies that may be "suspicious" in nature, it is critical that an officer respond to secure the scene, and possibly preserve evidence.
