The World Affairs Council of Northern California will greet the introduction of a new single currency in Europe with a half-day conference on "Europe after the Euro," on Saturday, February 27, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Hewlett-Packard Co., Building 20 auditorium, at 3000 Hanover St. in Palo Alto.
The conference will examine the fiscal, economic and political impacts of converting francs and marks and lira to a unified currency zone, particularly the effects on the United States and trade relations.
Stephen S. Cohen, professor and co-director of the Berkeley Roundtable on the International Economy, will discuss "Economic and Monetary Union." There will also be a talk on "A British Perspective," and three panel discussions on: how the Euro will change Europe; possible increased competition for the United States; and the effect on trade relations between Europe and the United States.
The conference is co-sponsored by the United Nations Association, Mid-Peninsula Chapter. Tickets are $10 for members, $15 for non-members, and free for students with identification. Registration starts at 8 a.m.
