Gamble Garden Center hosts Palo Alto stroll Gamble Garden Center hosts Palo Alto stroll (April 21, 1999)

Five private Palo Alto gardens will be featured in the Elizabeth F. Gamble Garden Center's 14th spring garden tour, to be held Friday and Saturday, April 30 and 31, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The tour includes an Old Palo Alto garden, filled with roses and geraniums, which has been restored and expanded. There is a classic Mediterranean villa surrounded by formal and informal garden rooms of herbs, clipped hedges and tropical plants. Another garden is a family retreat with open lawns and a children's playground. A serene garden has a private meditation area while a compact urban oasis features color-coordinated foliage and a unique display of garden tools.

A talk on using ornamental grasses will be one of several by experts at Gamble Center. The Gamble House boutique will feature Chinese porcelain, gift and garden items. Morris dancers and a strolling guitarist will entertain at lunch. A donation drawing will include a trip for two to historic Garden Week in Virginia, as well as garden items and services.

Cost of the self-guided tour is $25 per person with advance reservations required; call 329-1356. Reservations for box lunches at $15 each must be made before April 21; call 329-1356. All proceeds benefit Gamble Garden Center, a nonprofit community horticultural foundation, at 1431 Waverley St., Palo Alto.
