Residents can learn emergency communication methods, disaster medicine, and search and rescue techniques during an eight-class emergency preparedness series sponsored by the City of San Mateo Office of Emergency Services.

The classes will teach residents how to prepare for possible Y2K-related problems and other disasters, such as earthquakes, floods and fires. All classes will be held at the San Mateo City Hall, 330 W. 20th Ave. in San Mateo. The classes are as follows:

**Basic home preparedness. Learn to identify hazards in the city and home, create an emergency plan and obtain the right equipment and foods. Tuesday, April 20, 7 to 8:30 p.m., Room C.

**Captain's class on how to set up a neighborhood preparedness response group. Thursday, April 29, 6:30 p.m., Room C. Following this class, an emergency communications class in the same room at 7:30 p.m.

**First Aid class on emergency triage and disaster medicine. Thursday, May 6, 6:30 p.m., Room C. Following this class, in the same room from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m., there will be a class on shelter and special needs, including children, seniors and pets in disasters.

**Safety and security class on utility turn-offs, safety issues, and how to use fire extinguishers. Thursday, May 13, 6:30 p.m., Room C. Following this class, in the same room, at 7:30 p.m., a Red Cross class on damage assessment.

**Search and rescue class includes an hour multi-media demonstration followed by an actual, hands-on, in-the-dark search and rescue with students acting as rescuers and victims. Thursday, May 20, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., San Mateo Council Chambers in City Hall.
