Woodside High School will celebrate its 40th annual commencement with "Pomp and Circumstance" on Friday, June 18.
The program begins at 10 a.m. with the procession of seniors, in caps and gowns, to the school's Bradley Field, while the Woodside High School Band, directed by Steven Anderson, plays Edward Elgar's traditional march.
Denisse Guerrero, senior class president, will welcome parents and guests and then introduce the seniors, selected as graduation speakers. Shakeyma Brooks has chosen "A Dream" as the title of her speech. Tyler MacNiven will talk about "The Way It Was Delivered," a way of thanking all the people involved in making things happen at Woodside during the past four years.
Veronica Fonseca, class treasurer, will present the class gift to the school.
Principal Linda Common will introduce the nine valedictorians, who are at the very top of the Class of 1999. They have earned a grade-point-average of 4.1 or higher, and have taken some of the most rigorous classes during their four years at Woodside. The valedictorians, in alphabetical order, are: Theresa Au, Sandra Ballentine, Trevor Crane, Laural Finefrock, Kate Goines, Sonia Shariff, Christopher Soulard, Eric Trice and Amanda Walker.
Principal Common will present the graduating class to Trustee Allene Sieling of the Sequoia Union High School District Board. She will accept the class and present diplomas to the graduates, assisted by Principal Common.
Seniors will take turns calling the names of their classmates as they step forward to receive their diplomas. Participating in this ritual will be: Maria Alday, Kristina Bell, Erika Cervantes, Paloma Chavez, Teena Criswell, DeMeila Drayton, Veronica Fonseca, Kate Goines, Amy Griffin, Jennifer Guillena, Jessica Harmon, Amy Kang, Margaret Keag, Marisela Lara, Brant Martin, Liz Marsh, Laura Mauck, Isela Moreno, Amy Pessah, Tiffany Phillips, Jamaal Schoby, Preetika Sodhi and Kristine Tom.
Denisse Guerrero will then lead the graduates in the symbolic switching of the tassels from left to right.
Everyone is invited to join the graduates for refreshments, pictures and visiting during the reception on the field after the ceremony.
