Addison Wesley to move out of town Addison Wesley to move out of town (July 21, 1999)

Addison Wesley Longman Publishing Co. plans to move its Menlo Park division to San Francisco by mid-September, said general manager Linda Davis.

The college textbook publisher owns about 145,000 square feet of office space on Sand Hill Road. The publishing company takes up about half of that space, and then leases the other half to Goldman Sachs & Co. and Morgan Stanley & Co., which will remain at the site when the publisher moves north.

Addison Wesley plans to move into a newly remodeled building in the Telegraph Hill area of San Francisco.

The reason for the switch is "mostly to move to an urban environment," said Ms. Davis, adding that "Sand Hill Road is valuable to some people, but not particularly to a college textbook publishing company."

The investment firm of Donaldson, Lufkin, & Jenrette plans to move into the Addison Wesley space when the publishing company leaves, Ms. Davis said.

Addison Wesley employs about 100 people at its Menlo Park location; those employees are expected to continue working with the company at its new site. "The bulk" of these employees already live in San Francisco, Ms. Davis said.
