Shots fired at sheriff's substation Shots fired at sheriff's substation (September 15, 1999)

The predicted computer glitches may not have materialized September 9, but someone apparently provided early-morning fireworks of a different sort, by firing several shots into an unoccupied San Mateo County sheriff's substation in the North Fair Oaks neighborhood near Menlo Park.

Lt. Ike Ortiz said shots were fired at about 3:30 a.m. through a front door to the substation, shattering the glass. A preliminary investigation revealed five 9-mm casings on the street and sidewalk area outside the Middlefield Road building.

Lt. Ortiz said there are currently no suspects or witnesses, and detectives are investigating the matter. Anyone with information is asked to call the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office at 363-4915.
