Sacred Heart names new director Sacred Heart names new director (January 12, 2000)

After an 18-month national search, Sacred Heart Schools in Atherton has selected its new director of schools.

He is Joseph J. Ciancaglini, headmaster of the Gonzaga College High School in Washington, D.C., a nationally recognized Jesuit school.

Mr. Ciancaglini will start July 1 as director of the two Sacred Heart Schools in Atherton: St. Joseph's School, for children in preschool through eighth grade; and Sacred Heart Prep, a coeducational high school. The schools have a combined enrollment of almost 1,000 students.

He takes over from Sister Joan McKenna, who returned to Atherton almost two years ago to serve as the schools' interim director.

"Sacred Heart is extraordinarily fortunate to have an educator of Dr. Ciancaglini's stature and experience to lead our schools into the new century," said Jeffrey Chambers of Atherton, chair of the board of trustees. He described Mr. Chambers' work as remarkable at Gonzaga College High School, known for its high academic standards and commitment to values-based education.

Mr. Cinacaglini earned a doctorate in educational administration from Columbia University. Earlier, he received bachelor's and master's degrees in philosophy from Georgetown University, and a master's in counseling from Boston University.
