Chemical dumped in Huddart Park
(November 01, 2000) A portion of Kings Mountain Road in Woodside was closed down from about 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday, October 24, as officers from five San Mateo County health and law enforcement agencies investigated a 35-gallon drum found in Huddart Park.
San Mateo County hazardous materials crews determined that the unmarked drum contained sodium hydroxide, a chemical commonly used to make the drug methamphetamine, said Sgt. Wes Matsuura of the Sheriff's Office.
"It looks like the drum might have been intentionally dumped over a shoulder of (Kings Mountain Road)," said Sgt. Matsuura. "It rolled down the embankment where it collided with a tree and landed in a creek."
A small amount of the chemical leaked out of the drum when agents tried to remove it, said Sgt. Matsuura, but hazmat workers flushed it out of the creek.
The drum was taken to the state narcotics lab in San Jose.
Sheriff's investigators have no suspects at this point, but are investigating. Anyone with information about this case is encouraged to call 599-1536.
