PEOPLE: Atherton's John Goldman to head SF Symphony, Jewish Federation PEOPLE: Atherton's John Goldman to head SF Symphony, Jewish Federation (December 20, 2000)

John D. Goldman continues his family's tradition of public service as he begins a two-year term as president of the Jewish Community Federation (JCF) of San Francisco and becomes president-elect of the San Francisco Symphony's board of directors.

Mr. Goldman will work with outgoing symphony president Nancy Bechtle until he is elected to the presidency in December 2001.

Ann H. Doerr of Woodside and Helen Schwab of Atherton were also elected to the symphony's board of governors.

Mr. Goldman, who heads Goldman Insurance Services, will be the first third-generation president in JCF history. He hails from a long line of prominent civic leaders and philanthropists, including his great-great uncle Levi Strauss, and grandfather Walter A. Haas Sr.

His parents Richard and the late Rhoda Goldman have been influential leaders in community and international affairs.

A native San Franciscan, Mr. Goldman graduated from Swarthmore College in 1971 and Stanford University Graduate School of Business in 1975. He lives in Atherton with his wife, Marcia, son Aaron, who attends Swarthmore College, and daughter Jessica.

Mr. Goldman is the trustee of several family foundations, including the Richard and Rhoda Goldman Fund, the Goldman Environmental Foundation, and the Walter and Elise Haas Fund.

He serves on the board of trustees at Crystal Springs Uplands School and the board of managers of Swarthmore College. He is also a board member of the Wildlife Conservation Society; a member of the President's Council of Coyote Point Center for Environmental Education; and advisory board member of the Trust for Public Land.
