Drawings interpreting the human figure by Atherton artist Cat Roberts will be on display in the 1870 Art Center in Belmont from March 22 through April 29.

The exhibit, "The Pursuit of Gesture," will feature figurative drawings done on mylar using mixed oil media, sticks, crayons, and paint.

About the show, Ms. Roberts says, "The human figure remains the most difficult subject that I know. ... In my figurative drawings ... I hope to get beyond and behind the subject matter -- to draw out an essence, a mood."

Ms. Roberts has studied at Canada College, San Jose State University, University of California at Santa Cruz, Humboldt State College, and the Pacific Art League of Palo Alto.

She currently exhibits at Gallery House in Palo Alto and on SoArts.com. In addition, she has been represented by Gallery 9 in Los Altos and the Trajanowski Gallery in San Francisco, and has works in many private collections.

Gallery hours are 1 to 5 p.m. Thursdays through Sundays. A reception for the artist will be held on Sunday, April 1, from 4 to 6 p.m.
