Remembering educator Henry Page: Scholarship, named for him, will help students of color
(March 14, 2001) Educator Henry Page of Menlo Park, who died unexpectedly last year, will be remembered for his commitment to diversity and education through the creation of a $375,000 financial aid scholarship endowment, named in his honor, at the Girls' Middle School in Mountain View.
One high-achieving, low-income student of color will receive a scholarship to the Girls' Middle School each year in perpetuity from The Henry Page Memorial Endowment.
The campaign to establish the first endowment at the school began last spring. Contributions from 52 parents, staff, community members and other friends of Mr. Page helped to reach the $375,000 mark.
"Henry was a critical voice in our financial aid program, a leader in our diversity philosophy, and a dear friend," said Kathleen Bennett of Portola Valley, founder and head of the school.
His daughter, Audrey Page, was a member of the first sixth-grade class when the innovative Girls' Middle School opened in 1998. Mr. Page served on the school's diversity committee.
Mr. Page served the educational community in Palo Alto since 1971. Besides his work as a teacher and dean of schools at Cubberley and Palo Alto high schools, and as principal of Palo Alto Adult School, he worked with city and community groups to provide services to youth.
Each year, the Girls' Middle School undertakes a financial aid campaign to ensure that 30 percent of the students are high-achieving girls from low-income families for whom the school would be economically inaccessible without aid.
The aid program covers tuition, assistance with transportation, tutoring, home computers, uniforms, field trips, books and school supplies.
The Girls' Middle School specializes in educating girls in science, math and technology.
