Menlo coach named best in West Menlo coach named best in West (March 14, 2001)

Bill Shine, coach of both the boys' and girls' varsity tennis teams at Menlo School in Atherton, has been chosen to receive the 2000 West Region Coach of the Year Award for girls tennis from the National Federation of State High School Associations. The West Region includes the states of Arizona, California, Hawaii, Nevada, and Utah.

Coach Shine is the first Menlo coach to receive this honor.

Last fall, Mr. Shine coached the girls' team to another NorCal championship and a top-5 national ranking. In April 2000, he was the recipient of the high school tennis coach of the year award from the California Coaches Association.

Under his leadership, the boys' varsity team was ranked No. 2 in the nation.

Coach Shine coordinates Menlo's entire tennis program, including working with students at the Middle Schools in the sport.
