New law for drunken drivers New law for drunken drivers (March 14, 2001)

Under a new law, a driver convicted of multiple offenses of driving under the influence may drive with a restricted license by installing an ignition-interlock device that disables his vehicle if he has alcohol on his breath.

The driver also needs to have served at least half of his license suspension, completed a substance-abuse prevention program, and shown proof of financial responsibility.

"This is one more step to ensure people who have a drinking problem don't get behind the wheel of a car," says DMV director Steven Gourley. "With this device, their car won't start."
