Graduation 2001: Menlo-Atherton High School Graduation 2001: Menlo-Atherton High School (June 13, 2001)

Graduation at Menlo-Atherton High School on Thursday, June 14, at 4 p.m. will feature some changes to the traditional format.

Seniors, wearing maroon gowns and mortar boards, will walk through an arbor of flowers this year as they take their seats on the football field to the strains of "Pomp and Circumstance," played by the Menlo-Atherton Concert Band.

Staging for the ceremony has been changed. The speakers' platform will be along the 20-yard line with seating for parents and friends in the bleachers on both sides of the football field. Students, mostly juniors and sophomores, will serve as ushers.

This year, the students have added a more personal touch by asking their teachers to award their diplomas. They asked English teacher Liane Strub to be speaker at their graduation.

The program opens with senior Mark Lettieri playing "The Star Spangled Banner" on an electric guitar.

Senior class president Samantha Joslyn and senior class vice president Rosalinda Castaneda will give the welcome.

Speaking at their graduation will be five seniors who were selected to represent their class after they presented their original speeches to a panel. Traci Patton has chosen "Making A Difference" as the title of her speech. Sandor Fejervary and Unique Kinsey will give a speech jointly about people who have made a difference in their lives.

Naima Hopkins will talk about "Where Do We Go From Here?" and Pedro Melendez has chosen "Fulfillment of a Dream" for his title.

"Write Your Own Story, Class of 2001" is the title of Ms. Strub's talk.

Menlo-Atherton Principal Eric Hartwig will give a brief talk and then present the graduating class to President Lorraine Rumley of the Sequoia Union High School District Board. Then he, the M-A teachers and staff will award the diplomas.

Seniors, including the class officers, will take turns calling the names of their classmates as they step forward to receive their diplomas.

Samantha Joslyn and Rosalinda Castaneda then will lead the graduates in the ceremonial changing of the tassel.

The graduates will return to Menlo-Atherton later in the evening to board buses at 8 p.m. sharp to leave for Grad Night at an undisclosed destination.
