Graduation 2001: Hillview Middle School Graduation 2001: Hillview Middle School (June 13, 2001)

Eighth-graders at Hillview Middle School will graduate from their school and the Menlo Park City School District on Friday, June 15, during ceremonies that start at 5 p.m. on the school's blacktop.

For many Hillview families, graduation was almost a double-header. Their older students will graduate from Menlo-Atherton High School Thursday afternoon while their eighth-graders were originally scheduled to graduate from Hillview later on Thursday. Changing the Hillview date to Friday provided a happy solution for students and parents.

The ceremony begins with music by the Hillview Graduation Orchestra, directed by music specialist Bob Crabb.

Keeping with a Hillview tradition, all eighth-graders wrote, memorized and presented a speech on the theme, "A Life Lesson." The students, who will be the speakers at graduation, will be chosen early this week after the finalists give their speeches during an assembly.

This year, the students have asked teacher Phil Eaton, a member of the school's resource team, to be the featured adult speaker at graduation.

The Jeff Sorrells Memorial Scholarship will be awarded by the Morris Sorrells family of Atherton for the 15th year in honor of their son, who attended Hillview. The $1,500 scholarship will be used four years from now when this year's recipient graduates from high school.

Principal Mike Moore will give a talk and present the graduating class to the eighth-grade core teachers, who will award diplomas to their students. The core teachers are: Mark Schack, Lesley Martin, Susie Jayasanker, Carolyn Malquist, Daria Finstad, Mike Rogers and Margaret Appenheimer. Assisting them will be Lynn Eisner, student activities director.

After the ceremony, the graduates will celebrate in Hillview's recently completed multi-use building at a party, planned by their parents on a surprise theme. Hillview School's candidates for graduation are:
