The November 2002 election might seem far away, but the candidate filing deadline for the March primary has already come and gone. For most races, the deadline was Friday, December 7, at 5 p.m..
Even though candidates in these local races may have no other challengers for their parties' nominations, their names will still appear on the ballot and they must still run in the March primary in order to qualify for the November 2002 election, according to Linda Tulett, the San Mateo County district elections coordinator.
Appearing on the ballot to represent District 14 in the U.S. House of Representatives are incumbent Congresswoman Anna Eshoo, D-Atherton; Republican candidate Joseph Nixon, a businessman and videographer from Bonny Doon; and Libertarian party candidate Andrew Carver, a researcher from Menlo Park.
A second Republican candidate, Thomas Grassia of Santa Clara County did not qualify for inclusion on the ballot, according to Ms. Tulett.
Incumbent Jackie Speier, D-Hillsborough, is running for reelection to her seat representing District 8 in the state Senate. Also running for the seat on the March ballot are Robert Fliegler, a network architect from Daly City representing the Libertarian party, and Dennis Zell, a Burlingame attorney running for the Republican party nomination. Another Republican candidate, Marco Meza of San Francisco, did not qualify.
For the state Assembly seat representing District 21, incumbent Joe Simitian, D-Palo Alto, is up for reelection. Jim Russell, an educator from Los Gatos, is running for the Republican party and Raymond Bell, an engineer for Redwood City, will be on the March ballot to represent the Libertarian party.
Running for the office of San Mateo County coroner are Robert Foucrault, the chief deputy coroner and a Redwood City resident, and Ronald DeMaderios, a cemetery funeral representative who is also a Redwood City resident.
The filing period for the county superintendent of schools was extended to December 12, because incumbent Floyd Gonella is not running for reelection. As of Monday, December 10, only John Mehl, a San Mateo educator, had qualified as a candidate.
Further information about the primary election, which will be held March 5, is available at the San Mateo County Elections Web site, www.shapethefuture.org or by calling the elections office at 312-5222.
