New child car safety laws New child car safety laws (January 02, 2002)

New state laws prohibit leaving a child unattended and unrestrained in motor vehicles.

One law is known as Kaitlyn's Law, after 6-month-old Kaitlyn Russell of Corona in Southern California who died of heat exhaustion in her babysitter's van last year.

The law prohibits leaving unattended a child 6 years old or less in a vehicle with the engine running, or if a key is left in the ignition, or if there are other conditions that present a risk of uncontrolled vehicle movement or extreme temperature.

Another law requires that any child under 6, or weighing less than 60 pounds, be transported in a child passenger restraint system that meets federal safety standards. This law raises the restrictions from 4 years or less than 40 pounds.
