LETTERS LETTERS (April 03, 2002)

Grateful for writer's focus on important issues

Editor :

Thank heavens for people like Trish Hooper of Portola Valley who keep us on our toes. Her letter of March 27 (Where Were the Flag-waving Voters?) has reminded me of important issues. In particular, I remember when our first child approached voting age, and I gave her a button for her backpack that said, "Question Authority." It's time to find that button.

Thank you, Trish Hooper, for your vigilance. Eileen Drath Trinity Lane, Portola Valley

Councilman risked criticism on Mounted Patrol issue

Editor :

It would be dishonorable and foolish to let appearances interfere with legal, qualified decision-making.

In choosing to participate in the resolution of the Mounted Patrol issues with neighbors, Town Council member Joe Putnam risked and suffered personal attacks and criticism from those claiming he appeared to have a conflict-of-interest.

In fact, Mr. Putnam doesn't stand to gain or lose any more than the rest of the community, whatever the council decides regarding these issues.

Self-interest would be apparent if Mr. Putnam recused himself from participating in these matters. His knowledge, understanding, and ability to negotiate are worth a great deal. Fortunately, rather than shirk responsibility, Mr. Putnam put concerns for himself aside to better serve the town of Woodside.

The long-term value of his input is important to all of us in this community. We should admire and thank him for his work ethic, his dedication, and for having the courage to act on our behalf, rather than his own.

Kerry DeBenedetti

Portola Road, Woodside
