Graduation 2002: Menlo-Atherton High School Graduation 2002: Menlo-Atherton High School (June 12, 2002)

The procession of graduating seniors onto the Menlo-Atherton baseball field on Thursday, June 13, at 4 p.m. will be accompanied by the playing of "Pomp and Circumstance," the traditional graduation march composed in 1901 by the Englishman Edward Elgar and played on this occasion by the Menlo-Atherton High School Jazz Band.

Social studies teacher Jim MacKenzie, chosen as the most inspirational teacher by students, will lead the students in the processional.

After the graduates arrive at their assigned places, Stephanie Schwab, the 2001-2002 student body president, will give the pledge of allegiance to the flag, followed by the singing of the national anthem by senior Casey Fichtner.

Principal Eric Hartwig will open the ceremonies by welcoming parents and guests, then turn the microphone over to Alice S. Campbell, one of M-A's two administrative vice-principals, who will introduce the people on the dais and guests, including Sequoia Union High School District Trustee Olivia Martinez.

Dr. Steve Benigno, M-A's other administrative vice-principal, will give a public acknowledgement of the school's retiring and certificated staff.

The public address part of the program will be next. Mr. MacKenzie will speak first, followed by six seniors who will each give a talk. They are Selma L. Handzar, Tim Schechmeister, Pablo Lopez Duran, Auston Stewart, Emilia Cerrillo and Kenia Baquedano.

Mr. Hartwig will deliver the principal's address, followed by the commencement address from the guest of honor, Rosa Perez, the president of Canada College in Woodside, who will talk about being an American.

Presenting the diplomas to the graduating seniors will be athletic director Pam Wimberley and English teacher Elisa Nino-Sears. At the end of the program, senior class president Nicholas Reis will lead the switching of the tassels on the caps from the left to the right side to indicate the students' new status as high-school graduates.

The ball field will then open to parents and guests to join the graduates for refreshments, picture-taking and visiting.

The graduates will return to Menlo-Atherton later that evening to travel by bus to a graduation party.
