Suzi Tinsley of Menlo Park is the new president of the Junior League of Palo Alto/Mid Peninsula for the 2003-04 year. Local women serving with Mrs. Tinsley include: president-elect Sally Falkenhagen of Menlo Park; administrative vice president Anne Vitullo of Menlo Park; communications vice president Patricia Bainter of Atherton; and community projects vice president Beth Wistrom DeWolf of Menlo Park.

Gephardt in Woodside

Democratic presidential hopeful Dick Gephardt stopped by the Village Pub in Woodside on May 30 for a private meeting with Dale Djerassi of Skyline. Mr. Djerassi, who is active in Democratic circles, had met Rep. Gephardt, former Democratic leader of the House, in San Francisco on an earlier visit, and was especially impressed with his energy policy.

Mr. Djerassi, his son, Alexander, and friends met with Rep. Gephardt in a private room in the Pub. Mr. Djerassi had the visit videotaped and intends to use a portion of it in a documentary on energy that he is producing.

Summer at Filoli

A summer Saturday at Filoli will be filled with family entertainment, according to Bob French, chairman of "Summer at Filoli: A Family Celebration," to be held June 28 from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Activities include scrapbook workshops, iced tea tastings, herb vinegar demonstrations, and pastimes for the children, such as juggling and puppet shows, a baby animal petting zoo, and storytime.

Musicians will perform in the gardens, where more than 500 roses will be in bloom. A "woody" station wagon and a classic convertible in the courtyard will provide a background for photo opportunities. Both the Friends of Filoli and Sterling Libraries will be open for the day.

Admission is $15 for adults; $1 for children 2-12; free for children under 2. Lunches with either barbecued chicken or sausages will be for sale for $15 for adults. Children's lunches with hot dogs or hamburgers will be $8. Make-your-own sundaes will also be for sale. For ticket information, call Filoli's office at 364-8300, ext. 508.

La Honda fair

The La Honda country fair and music festival will be held from 11 a.m. to dusk Saturday and Sunday, June 14 and 15, at La Honda Gardens.

The fair will feature craft booths and food booths manned by local organizations. Nigel Webb, music chairman, has put together a lineup of local bands, providing continuous music. Raffle prizes will include a vacation in Canada, a Coastside getaway, and restaurant gift certificates. The fair supports art and music programs at the La Honda Elementary School.

To reach the fair, take Woodside Road (Highway 84) west through the town of Woodside, and past the intersection of Highway 35, for 7 miles to La Honda Center. For more information, call 747-0351.

Corpus Christi

The public is invited to attend the feast of Corpus Christi on Sunday, June 22, at Corpus Christi Monastery, 215 Oak Grove Ave., Menlo Park. Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. by the Rev. Bartholomew Hutcherson of the Newman Catholic Center, University of Nevada, Las Vegas. The Dominican novice brothers from St. Dominic's in San Francisco will join the nuns in singing the music for the Mass, which will be followed by a procession and Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament.

Ladera movies

"The Rookie," a Disney Productions movie, will be shown at 7:30 p.m. Friday, June 13, at Ladera Community Church, 3300 Alpine Road, Portola Valley. Family movies will be shown every Friday through August 1. "Angels in the Outfield" will be screened June 20 and "The Music Man" plays June 27. Cost is $3. For more information call 949-5483.

Next Generation

The third annual Family Art Day, featuring projects using materials found in the garden, will be held from noon to 3 p.m. Sunday, June 22, on the north lawn of Cantor Arts Center, Stanford University.

The event is sponsored by Next Generation, an organization of young adults interested in promoting the Cantor Center of Visual Arts. Activities will include fruit and vegetable painting, feather and twig painting, leaf and bark rubbing, and decorating a picket fence to be donated to a community garden.

Admission is by reservation only, with pre-registration required. Reservations will be taken by fax, 725-0464; or phone, 723-4177. Cost for members is $15 per adult; $10 per child, age 2 to 12. Cost for non-members is $20 per adult, $15 per child age 2 to 12. Children under 2 are free. Admission includes art materials and lunch catered by Chili's Grill & Bar.

Tuesday teas

There will be no Tuesday Tea on June 10 at Little House senior center. Instead join the Peninsula Volunteers at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 11, in the courtyard to celebrate the 55th anniversary of Little House. The regular Tuesday Teas will resume the next week from 1:45 to 2:45 p.m. with "Roam through Roman London," an imaginary walk discovering which Roman landmarks still exist. Little House is located at 800 Middle Ave., Menlo Park.

Summer reading

The Menlo Park Library invites all children, from preschool on up, and their parents to join the Summer Reading Club. Those who read (or have someone read to them) 90 minutes a week for seven weeks will earn a free book. There will also be a weekly drawing for puppets. Sign-ups begin Saturday, June 14.

Children's programs will be held at 1:30 every Wednesday during July. For more information call 330-2530 or pick up a flyer at the library.
