New Down Syndrome research center at Stanford New Down Syndrome research center at Stanford (December 10, 2003)

Stanford University is establishing The Center for Research and Treatment of Down Syndrome (DS) to increase scientific interest in the syndrome, conduct research and provide treatment.

Dr. William Mobley, director of the privately funded effort, is recruiting clinicians and scientists to pursue a focused research agenda that defines the neurobiological basis of DS.

The center will change the culture and treatment of research and treatment of DS by developing a multidisciplinary team at Stanford and elsewhere and providing research support, said Russell Phillips, associate director.

"We expect it to make DS a topic of high priority for research and to attract many bright and committed young investigators into the field," he said.

Research costs will be lowered through the establishment of core facilities at Stanford Medical School, Mr. Phillips said.
