Others ways to help seniors
(December 10, 2003) Following are nonprofit organizations that serve seniors. They are not part of the Holiday Fund, so gifts and checks should be sent directly to them. Many also need volunteers.
** Menlo Park Senior Center offers a culturally diverse place where seniors can enjoy good food, friendship and fun and take a variety of classes. It also offers a hot lunch Monday through Friday for seniors at $2.25; a weekly "Brown Bag" program, providing groceries for low-income seniors; and monthly trips to Indian casinos. Transportation to and from the center is provided for disabled seniors by arrangement at no cost. To reach: Menlo Park Senior Center, 110 Terminal Ave., Menlo Park, CA 94025; 330-2280.
** Avenidas, a multi-service agency for seniors and their families. Programs include: Senior Day Health Center, a state-licensed adult day health program; Senior Home Repair; social work services; and Senior Care, personalized and managed care to enable older adults to remain at home. ** Menlo Park Veterans Hospital Senior Projects provide nursing, respite and extended care for over 400 veterans at the hospital on Willow Road in Menlo Park. Residential care includes post traumatic stress disorder, drug and alcohol treatment, and homeless rehabilitation. ** Peninsula Volunteers Inc. , founded over 50 years ago, continues to develop and expand its services to senior citizens. Major programs in Menlo Park include: Little House Activity Center at 800 Middle Ave., offering evening and day classes, a computer center, fitness programs, hot meals and leisure activities; Rosener House, adult day services at 500 Arbor Road for frail elderly as well as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and stroke patients; Meals on Wheels, which delivers 70,000 meals a year to home-bound seniors and disabled people from San Carlos to East Palo Alto. Low-income senior housing in Menlo Park for independent living is offered at Partridge/Kennedy Apartments with 30 units and award-winning Crane Place with 93 units.
