Moore Foundation grant aims to improve nursing Moore Foundation grant aims to improve nursing (December 10, 2003)

The Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation plans to donate $110 million over 10 years to improve the quantity and quality of nursing in the Bay Area.

The Betty Irene Moore Nursing Initiative plans to tackle the crisis in nursing care by funding programs in five Bay Area counties that will train additional registered nurses, and improve their clinical skills and effectiveness.

"Quality of care for hospital patients is threatened as the shortage of nurses progressively worsens," said Ms. Moore of Woodside. "If left unaddressed, these issues will become a severe public health problem."

Ms. Moore brings personal experience to bear on the initiative. She has had problems with nursing during several hospital stays. Most notably, she once received an insulin injection intended for another patient; both suffered as a result.

Gordon Moore, co-founder of chip-giant Intel Corp., and Ms. Moore established their foundation in 2000 to support programs helping the environment, higher education, scientific research, and selected projects in the Bay Area.
