City hands out tree awards City hands out tree awards (December 10, 2003)

Menlo Park residents love their tree-lined streets -- some, apparently, more than others.

The city's Environmental Quality Commission recently gave out four Heritage Tree Awards to residents who have kept large trees on their property healthy and well-maintained.

The winners are Janis Donaghy, for a silver maple on Felton Drive; JoAnn Rogers, for a camphor on Claremont Place; Steve and Leslie Furney-Howe, for a bay laurel on Hanna Way; and Ted and Rachel Tasch, for a grove of bay laurels on Hanna Way.

Heritage trees, which require a city permit to remove or heavily prune, have trunks measuring 47 inches or more in circumference at 4 feet above the ground. Redwood and native oak trees are considered heritage trees if their trunks measure 31.4 inches or more in circumference.
