Ask the officer Ask the officer (December 17, 2003)

Menlo Park police officer Glenn J. Raggio answers questions about the police and law enforcement. Call 330-6396, or e-mail: asktheofficer@menlopark.org.

Q. Does Menlo Park use radar machines to catch speeders? Is the officer obliged to show the driver the speed recorded by the machine?

A. Officers have the option of using radar guns, and they often do while working traffic. Keep in mind that officers also prefer to pace the speeder in addition to recording the radar speed. If you ask an officer if he or she used radar to track you and then request to see the radar reading, the officer is likely to grant your request. It's not a right, though; it's at the officer's discretion.
