Mary Ellen Burke

School librarian

Mary Ellen "Mazie" Burke, a resident of Menlo Park for 24 years, died December 7 after a brief illness. She was 53.

Ms. Burke was born in Milton, Massachusetts, and attended Notre Dame University in South Bend, Indiana. She was a volunteer at St. Raymond School in Menlo Park for four years, then was hired to become the school's librarian four years ago.

She is survived by her husband of 25 years, William B. Burke; daughters Katherine Burke of Chatham, Massachusetts, and Ellen Burke of Menlo Park; her father, Dr. Herbert Minkel of Centerville, Massachusetts; a brother, Herbert Minkel Jr. of New York City; and sisters Ann Corkery of Salisbury, Connecticut, Jean Minkel of New Windsor, Massachusetts, and Maura Minkel Frackleton of Westford, Massachusetts.

The family prefers memorials to the Mary Clark Endowment Fund for St. Raymond School. A memorial Mass was held at Church of the Nativity. Arrangements were under the direction of the Menlo Park Chapel of Spangler Mortuaries.


Bette Krost

Longtime Menlo Park resident

Beverly (Bette) Krost, who had lived in Menlo Park since 1954, died at home, surrounded by her family, December 5.

Ms. Krost was born in San Francisco and grew up in Daly City. She graduated from Jefferson High School, where she was valedictorian. She was offered several college scholarships, but chose to work to help support her family after the death of her father.

During World War II she worked at Treasure Island, where she met and later married Robert (Bob) Krost, a gunner's mate in the U.S. Navy. The couple moved to Menlo Park with their two daughters. For 30 years Ms. Krost helped her husband run their family business, Menlo Oaks Plumbing.

Ms. Krost enjoyed traveling and playing golf. She was an accomplished artist and enjoyed working in her garden, tending her roses, say family members. She was a member of St. Denis Guild for many years.

She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Robert; daughters Cathie Harry of Redwood City and Cindie Krost of Menlo Park; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Interment was at Holy Cross Cemetery.


Mildred Isheim

:Social services employee

Mildred S. Isheim, a resident of Menlo Park since 1978, died November 26 at age 92.

Ms. Isheim was born in Lakewood, Ohio. She was a graduate of Ohio Wesleyan University, and earned master's degrees in language from Columbia University and in social service administration from Case Western Reserve University.

For many years she worked in social services for Broward County in Florida. After retiring, she moved to Menlo Park, where she was active at St. Raymond Church and volunteered as a Pink Lady at Stanford Hospital.
