Four honored at Sacred Heart
(December 17, 2003) St. Madeleine Sophie Awards were given to Robert Glockner, Janet Whitchurch, Sister Helen Costello and Sister Ann McGowan in a recent ceremony in the chapel at Sacred Heart Schools in Atherton.
The award, named for the founder of the Society of the Religious of Sacred Heart, honors those who have made extraordinary contributions to Sacred Heart Schools.
Sister Nancy Morris presented the award to Robert Glockner of Menlo Park for his leadership and contributions as a trustee. Mr. Glockner served as chairman of Sacred Heart's first major capital campaign, raising $3.5 million, and funding the completion of the McGanney Gymnasium. He served on the schools' board for 12 years.
Sister Ann McGowan received the award for her years as principal of St. Joseph School. Sister McGowan first started teaching at St. Joseph's in the early 1970s and left in 1992. The award was presented by St. Joseph principal, Karen Eshoo.
Janet Whitchurch, chairman of the fine arts department at Sacred Heart Prep, started teaching at the school in 1969. She formerly taught studio art, art history and freshman history. Her award was presented by Connie Solari, dean of academics.
Sister Helen Costello, who was honored for her years of service, taught at St. Joseph's School from the early 1950s until 1967. Since leaving the school, she has worked with the handicapped, assisted children with cancer, and counseled students. Ron Conway, a St. Joseph's alumnus and parent of a senior at Sacred Heart, presented her award.
A reception for 200 people followed the ceremony.
