Drunken driving net catches 24
(December 24, 2003) Menlo Park police have made 14 arrests for drunken driving since the annual "Avoid the 23" campaign began Friday, December 12. Atherton police are close behind with 10 arrests, said Jan Ford, a campaign spokeswoman.
The number 23 refers to the 23 law enforcement agencies in San Mateo County.
Specific numbers were not available for Woodside or Portola Valley, which are patrolled by the Sheriff's Office. Sheriffs have made four arrests in the county so far in this year's campaign, Ms. Ford said.
Two sobriety checkpoints in southern San Mateo County are planned for East Palo Alto December 26 and 31. The checkpoints start between 7 and 9 p.m. and run until 2 or 3 a.m.
The CHP, meanwhile, will be saturating the freeways during "maximum enforcement periods" from December 24 to 27 and December 31 to January 1, Ms. Ford said.
