Field trips for young skaters Field trips for young skaters (December 31, 2003)

Local skaters yearning for a place to cut loose should mark Saturday, January 17, on their calendars. That's when the city of Menlo Park's community services department is taking young skaters on a field trip to the Redwood City skate park.

This outing will be part of a new monthly trip program to nearby parks, designed to give youngsters a place to skate while Menlo Park's new park is under construction, city spokesman J. Michael Gonzales said. Subsequent destinations will be announced a month in advance.

Menlo Park's temporary park at the Civic Center has been closed and its ramps sold, with the proceeds earmarked for opening celebrations for the new park, which is planned to be built near the Civic Center baseball field at Mielke Drive and Alma Street. That project has gone out to bid and could have a groundbreaking early next year, officials said.
